Interview w/ Kids Photographer Ángela Candelas
What inspired you to become a (fashion and) children's photographer?
I love photographing people and being able to bring out their full potential, with children it is about achieving that spontaneity that they have inside.
What techniques or strategies do you use to relax children in front of the camera and capture natural shots?
I use games, I talk to them, I ask them how their day is, what they like to do, so I can become their bestie and it will feel like a game.
Are there specific age groups or personality types you like to work with? Why?
Yes, I like to photograph ages between 6 and 12 years old since they are older and not so rebellious. Less than 5 years old is complicated because they are very babies and you can't get the poses you want.
How do you handle situations in which children are shy or uncooperative during a photo session?
I always try to talk to them, make friends with them, play, so they let loose a little and feel more comfortable.
What are some of the unique challenges you face when photographing children?
Being able to mediate with them and make them feel comfortable being themselves and being able to capture it in the photograph.
What role do parents or caregivers play during a photo session with children?
Parents are of great help for the session, since they know them and know how to bring out their spontaneity with a simple word or gesture.
Can you share some of the unexpected, funny or touching moments you have experienced while working?
Yes, many times children come up to give you hugs like that out of nowhere, and that makes me very happy.
What trends do you currently observe in the field of children's photography?
Spontaneity.
What advice would you give to parents to prepare a photo session with their children?
To be patient and not force their children if they really see that they are not uncomfortable.
What does it mean to you to capture memories for families/children?
It has a very great meaning, since it will be a memory that they will keep all their lives and I like that they remember it as something fun and unique.
Are there specific locations or environments that work especially well for children's photo sessions? Why?
Yes, I like to photograph in locations where there are not many props, that is, it is as clean as possible, I always like the models to be the center of attention, for example, a beach, a tree, a wall… I also like to photograph in a photography studio with plain background colors.
How have you evolved as a photographer over time, especially when it comes to working with children?
I think my evolution has been very good and I have been improving more and more throughout these years.
What advice would you give to other photographers interested in specializing in children's photography?
I would tell them to visualize a lot of children's fashion photography, soak up magazines, what the trends are, clothing brands, get inspired and with this make their own sessions. Also, they should have a lot of patience with children and learn to deal with them to get their maximum potential.
How does a day in your life like?
I work as a freelance fashion photographer, I do photo shoots for clothing brands and magazines constantly, and if I'm not shooting, I'm on the computer editing the photographs.
What is your favorite photo session?
I don't have a favorite photo session, all the ones I have done are unique and special.
