Tyla’s Look “Sands in Time”

Tyla's attire for the 2024 Met Gala garnered attention and admiration, showcasing her daring fashion sense and creative expression.

The "Truth or Dare" artist made a striking entrance at the May 6 event, donning a form-fitting strapless gown by Balmain crafted entirely from sand—a clever nod to the event's "The Garden of Time" theme and the passage of time itself.

While Tyla's ensemble was undeniably eye-catching, its intricate design mirrored the fragility of the intricate garments on display in the Costume Institute's latest exhibit, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." After being assisted up the iconic Met Gala stairs, the musician found it necessary to alter the lower portion of her sand dress.

Balmain's creative director, Olivier Rousteing, shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the dress transformation, showcasing the removal of the floor-length train to reveal a thigh-high minidress.

Tyla provided insights into her unconventional outfit, revealing that it was composed of three varieties of sand and molded to her body like a plaster of Paris sculpture. Embracing the theme further, she accessorized with an hourglass clutch and adorned her body with streaks of sand.

"We aimed to create something innovative, something entirely distinct for my inaugural Met Gala," Tyla explained to Vogue. "When Balmain presented me with the concept and sketch, I immediately knew it was the perfect fit. The concept was bold, and I was captivated by it."

Olivier elaborated on the inspiration behind his creation, describing it as a desire to challenge boundaries and transform a transient material into a lasting masterpiece.

"The notion of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand sparked my imagination," he shared. "I am thrilled with the final outcome. I couldn't envision a more fitting individual to showcase this look, which I believe embodies imagination, innovation, and the transformative nature of art."
